CMS is a non-profit (501c3) mission-minded organization that provides a mechanism through which individuals and local churches can expand their reach and target their financial giving to various mission works. CMS also provides the ability to pool resources from many individuals and churches in order to pursue mission efforts that an individual church might struggle to begin and maintain.
Local Church Authority
We believe that the Lord has setup His church in such a way that each church is a local, visible, and independent body of believers who answer to Jesus Christ alone. While denominational and associational ties can provide fellowship and support, it is the local church that Christ commissioned to spread the Gospel of His Son. As an independent body, the local church determines how it will fulfill the commission it has been given by the Lord.
Covenant Missionary Society has therefore been established under the authority of a local church - Covenant Missionary Baptist Church. Covenant church maintains operational control of CMS by means of possessing the sole authority to seat and unseat the Board of Directors responsible for the governance of the organization.
